The focus of our consulting practice was always the client. When ever we had difficulty, our focus on helping the client. I always found that was the key to a successful consulting practice. The answer was not always simple because often the return question was who is the client. The conversation that then happened was very helpful in refocusing the discussion on solutions.
Often these discussion created major breakthroughs. I was always amazed at how effective this line of thinking was. I think it really reoriented our thinking to seeing the problem in the proper light. I was often thinking of my success as opposed to the success of my client. This question really helped me focus on the issue at hand as opposed to myself.
