Breakthough The Organizational Barriers

In any change initiative there are many barriers, most fall into these four resistances/barriers:

  1. Psychcological
  2. Structural
  3. Cultural
  4. Political

One of the objectives of a Rapid Results program is to address these resistances or barriers and create an environment that is empowered to work through or break through these barriers.

I found that knowing that we are embracing these issues and working together in a team environment looking for the breakthroughs instead of the go arounds that end up biting us in the butt later.

From a data and metadata perspective I want to be two mouse clicks from the information I am looking for.
For instance with Google if I search for Project X and am looking for my company well that’s more that 6 clicks away for sure. But If I am crafty and used “Project X Ltd pxltd” as my search string bingo, this blog is the first entry. — two clicks away!

It’s funny I am reading the tipping point and early on it talks about the 6 degrees of separation.
    Some good thought provoking ideas

Those same barriers that stop breakthroughs are used by others to maintain their dominance. Often, with a false sense of security… Consider the impact of web 2.0.. Over-hyped? Yes. But we see the changing landscape of the haves and have-nots.
I recently presented at the McMaster University World Congress of innovation on the topic of social computing at Bell Canada. You can read about it on the blog

In this presentation, I discussed a recent episode of dateline that examined the theory of “6 Degrees of Seperation” and how they randomly took people from around the world and demonstrated they were connected through a series of people (a social network). Over and over, people have been demonstrating this theory and you mathmatical equaitions that also provide evidence to support it. The interesting thing for me was that it means that ANY piece of data, ANY piece of insight, ANY piece knowledge or creative thought was ONLY 6 steps away from me. If one could harness this, imagine the breakthroughs!!!
But that’s the question isn’t it? How does one navigte this social network? Well one answer is that you don’t. Instead you let the path come to you. You can open it up to the world and let the millions of people come to you. Theory only? Absolutely not. Pick up Don Tapscott’s most recent book, “Wikinomics” and you’ll read several examples of this. Good, Bad or Indifferent, those barriers that enabled the few to control the message has shifted in new and evocative ways.
