Today at 11am people all across Canada observed remembrance day – I hope.
Thomas, Pete, Cori and I finished our coffees at Starbucks today in Unionville in time for the parade and then went outside for the moment of silence. It was a lovely moment. As we drove home I was happy to see many other organized celebrations.
We need to remember.
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
– John McCrae, 1915
Lest we forget.
I know no one personally who has perished in a world conflict, yet I am compelled to mourn their loss and remember their sacrifice for me, for us.
